Better infrastructure = better learning!
There is strong evidence that high-quality infrastructure facilitates better instruction, improves student outcomes, and reduces dropout rates, among other benefits. For example, a recent study from the U.K. found that environmental and design elements of school infrastructure together explained 16 percent of variation in primary students’ academic progress (World Bank).
We want our Impact Network students to thrive. The Operations Coordinators assigned to each cluster of schools visit our schools weekly and assess the environment. They then budget and carry out maintenance works to ensure the buildings are safe and fit for purpose. Many of the schools we work in still lack of adequate classrooms to support the increasing demands of the communities we serve.
Recently, we have been fortunate to receive funding that has allowed us to build two learning structures and additional latrines. The multipurpose structures placed at Kanyelele in Katete and Sivwa in Sinda differ from the traditional 2 room classroom blocks. The structure includes a large auditorium, a small classroom, storage spaces, and plenty of windows and light.
The most exciting aspect of these multipurpose structures is that all of our staff will fit into the large room when all sites come together for training. What a difference it will make to have an indoor area we can fit 150 teachers in! We’ve included a stage too, which has wide-ranging possibilities – speakers and presentations can be elevated, students can showcase different activities to their parents during literacy day, spelling bees, talent shows, etc.
I am thrilled to see this project developing and look forward to having our beautiful and versatile rooms as well as latrines in use at the start of next year!
