Embracing creative learning through upcycling...
Each term, we provide academic enrichment programs to offer teachers and pupils an opportunity to engage in longer thematic projects. On these 'Special Days', regular classes are suspended to allow extended time for hands-on projects.
This term, the theme of our special day was Upcycling and students were engaged in innovative, hands-on projects that combined creativity with sustainability. It's a unique occasion where students use local and discarded materials to craft useful items like learning aids, teaching tools, and toys. This not only fosters creativity but also nurtures environmental responsibility by encouraging the reuse of materials that would otherwise be wasted.
While a special day provides a break from traditional lessons, it is far from a day off. Every activity, guideline, and lesson plan for this day is meticulously designed to align with the Zambian syllabus for the current term. This ensures that students not only learn through practical experience but also reinforce key concepts covered in their regular studies. It also ensures that the project is purposeful and complements their ongoing learning.
Upcycling encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration among students. It fosters a hands-on approach to learning that complements classroom teaching and provides a platform for students to apply their knowledge in practical ways. During the Upcycling special day, students work both individually and in teams under the guidance of our dedicated teachers. They brainstorm ideas, design prototypes, and create their projects using materials sourced locally or provided by the project team.
During this day, learners are reminded of the importance of protecting the environment from pollution, such as burning trash, which contributes to the global warming currently affecting our country. Creating artwork with recycled materials helps reduce waste in communities and serves as a means of sensitizing the community to see waste as treasure rather than garbage.
The day culminates in a showcase where students can proudly display their creations and share their experiences with peers and teachers.
Like any regular school day, we deeply appreciate parents, guardians, teachers, and other stakeholders who show a strong interest in academic programs for students and support this program. This support includes discussing the importance of sustainability. Their involvement extends beyond mere support to actively assisting students in gathering suitable materials for their projects. This hands-on approach reinforces the values of creativity, resourcefulness, and environmental awareness that we strive to instill in our students.
Through special days, we believe in creating a memorable and enriching experience for our students, providing them with valuable skills and perspectives that extend beyond the classroom!
