"We are becoming Earth Warriors!"
We are becoming Earth Warriors!
On Monday, our Grade 1 to Grade 4 students will have their first of a year-long series of lessons to learn about climate change and discover what they can do to protect our environment. This new climate change education project is possible through a partnership between Impact Network and Earth Warriors, who authored the curriculum. Our schools are joining with two schools in Lusaka and 10 schools across Botswana to pilot the lessons in 2023.
Current research predicts that our young learners will face many extreme weather events in their lives. Specifically, they are two times more likely to experience wildfire, three times more likely to experience droughts and seven times more likely to experience heat waves. The good news is that research also indicates that educating children about climate issues has the power to reduce future carbon emissions. Our students will have one “Earth Warriors” lesson per week and complete a total of 30 lessons in 2023. The lessons are made into three modules – the first one focuses on learning about the Earth’s resources and how they can be protected, the second module focuses on climate change and how it can be reduced through our actions, and the last focuses on community engagement and how we can lead our communities to have good environmental practices.
Each lesson includes age-appropriate, hands-on activities and use fun characters like “Rooty the Tree” and “Po the Polar Bear” to teach important concepts. There are even a few villainous characters like “Bo the Plastic Bottle” and “Smokey” a cloud of gases and students learn how these characters can be defeated. The lessons are carefully designed to have a positive disposition by focusing on empowering students to overcome climate change rather than to be fearful about this issue. Our Grade 1 to Grade 4 students are too young to have done much to contribute to the climate crisis, but they are the ones who will the most impacted by it. We are excited that this partnership with Earth Warriors will give our learners the tools to contribute to a better future!

We are grateful for Addax & Oryx Foundation who funded so much of our other work at Impact Earth. Onwards!
